The journey to achieve success can be brutal at times. It’s easy to feel like giving up when things get tough. However, if you quit, you’re not just giving up on your dreams but you’re also giving up on those you were created to help.
The entrepreneurial journey has many peaks and valleys. There are many highs and lows that you must navigate.
When you feel like quitting on your dream, here are 5 steps to take to get back on track:
1 – Remember Why You Started
Every business starts with a dream. In the process of developing your program, writing your book, creating your course, building your systems, and chipping away at all the necessary logistics of a business, it’s easy to forget why you started. Take time to reflect on what caused you to begin in the first place. Go back to the beginning in your mind. Remember what sparked the fire inside you. Write down all the things you were thinking and feeling when you first began. Let these thoughts reignite your passion.
2 – Renew Your Purpose
An impactful business isn’t just about making money. There are certainly ways to do that, but most entrepreneurs want to make a difference in the world. They want to use their God-given talents and abilities to help people in ways that transform their lives. Reflect on your personal “why.” Why do you do what you do? What do you believe is your God-given purpose for even existing in this generation? Dig deep and renew your purpose for living, not just for having a business. Then, connect the dots between your personal and business purposes.
3 – Imagine the Impact You Can Have
While a business begins with you, it doesn’t end with you. A business exists to serve customers and clients. Yes, you can earn a nice income and build the life of your dreams, but that is a byproduct of helping others. One helpful exercise is writing a letter to yourself from a fictional customer. Write it from their perspective about how your product or service has impacted their life. Put yourself in their shoes as someone who needs what you have to offer and who discovers that there are solutions to their problems or ways to achieve their greatest desires.

4 – Make a List of Clear Next Steps
It can be overwhelming to think of EVERYTHING you need to do in your business. It can discourage you from even beginning. Invest time writing down clear next steps that you can accomplish immediately. What actions are within your reach? What needs to be done first or next in order to make progress toward achieving your goals? What will make the most impact in the immediate future? Brainstorm and prioritize.
5 – Take Action
Doing steps 1-4 will get you moving, but in order to truly persevere you must take action. Review your list of next steps and then act. Put your steps in your calendar so they become a priority. Tell your calendar what you need to do and when, then let your calendar tell you what to do when each time slot arrives. Be specific. Don’t act only when you feel like it. Rather, act your way into feeling good. Feelings follow actions, not vice versa. Take the advice of Thomas Carlyle who said “Do what lies clearly at hand.”
It’s normal to feel discouraged at times as you build your business. Don’t beat yourself up. Instead, get away to pause and reflect using these five steps for renewing your energy and mindset.
