Many authors, coaches, and course creators are very comfortable with creating content and sharing it with the world. However, many hit what feels like an immovable obstacle when it comes to sales.

We get it. The stereotypical salesman has put a bad taste in our mouths too. This is why so many people shy away from “making the ask.”

This is a challenge entrepreneurs must overcome in order to build and grow a successful business.

If you find yourself struggling in this area, take these 4 actions to become more confident and comfortable with selling your valuable products and services:

1 – Clarify Your Offer

If you are unclear about what you’re offering others, you will always struggle with selling. Vague, general offers rarely sell. People need to know what they are getting for their hard-earned money. They are skeptical about all the claims and promotions, especially with the saturation of online advertising. Invest the time to make sure your offer is clear to your target audience.

2 – Focus On Serving First

Selling is only “icky” when you try to force yourself upon disinterested or unsuspecting customers. When you focus on serving, you show you truly care for the people you designed your offer for. Determine what your ideal customer needs or wants, then find ways to serve them through free or low-cost valuable content. Once they have a good idea of who you are and how you can help them they’ll be more likely to buy from you. They’ll actually start coming to you instead of you having to chase them. Wouldn’t that be amazing?!

3 – Embrace Selling As a Way of Helping Others

There’s a famous quote that says, “People like to buy, but they don’t like to be sold.” The reality is that we’re all consumers. We all buy products and services regularly. However, no one likes feeling pressured to buy. When you understand that your offer can truly help people solve a problem or fulfill a desire, it changes your whole approach. Instead of envisioning yourself as the ‘sleazy used car salesman,’ imagine yourself as someone who genuinely cares about helping others…because you do!

4 – Choose to Be Courageous

Courage is a choice. When it comes to sales, you must overcome whatever fears you may have in order to accomplish the goal of building a thriving business. Anything you do for the first time can feel uncomfortable or scary. However, choose to be courageous, push through your fears, and focus on serving others. When you do that, the spotlight shifts from you to them. Then you can give your customers your best and help them with your offer.

Salesmanship is a skill and art that needs to be developed. We encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and implement these four important actions. When you do, your business will grow, you’ll become more confident, and you’ll be able to help more people.
