Soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world, but it can be a frustrating game to watch if you only desire to see forward movement. Soccer isn’t played that way. Many times, the best play is to kick the ball backward in order to move forward most effectively. This allows the players to reset and create space to advance the ball up the field.

Business is often the same way.

When we begin our entrepreneurial journeys, we’re full of vision, excitement, energy, and anticipation to move forward fast. We dive head-first into the deep end and expect all the pieces to come together perfectly. Unfortunately, that rarely happens.

Most entrepreneurs hit the ground running only to crash into unexpected walls, which leads to confusion and discouragement. This is when people start to doubt themselves and their vision. Unfortunately, many choose to quit.

A key business lesson we must learn is that often the best way forward is to step back to assess, learn, and grow so we are able to move forward successfully.

train going forward

This isn’t an easy decision because we all like and want forward progress!

It is critically important to keep your end goal or desire in mind. When you do this, you’re more willing to go through the ups and downs of building your business. You’re more realistic in your expectations. You’re less likely to quit when the going gets tough.

There’s no magic 3-step process or 5-step formula to learn to do this well. You simply need to slow down, think about your obstacles and opportunities, and assess where you can improve to confidently and effectively advance.

Give yourself the grace and space to think and reflect. Revisit your end goal of why you started your business. Consider where you’ve gone off-track or been distracted from your original plan.

Recognize the need to not just work “in” your business, but also “on” it consistently. This requires prayer, reflection, and strategic thinking. To achieve this, you need to create space in your schedule. Get a journal to write down your thoughts and document ideas that come to mind.

Moving forward at 100 miles per hour is fun until you hit a wall. Sometimes, the best move is to slow down and take a step back so you can see things more clearly from a different perspective.

Pull out your calendar right now and block some time to simply think about your business. During that time, ask yourself the following questions:

  • What’s working well?
  • What’s not working?
  • Where am I off track?
  • Am I getting closer to my end goal?
    • If not, what is in the way?
    • If yes, what can accelerate my progress?
  • What can I do to overcome my obstacles or challenges?
  • What do I need to learn in order to get to the next level?

Scheduling the time to reflect on these types of questions is a powerful exercise that many hard-charging action-oriented entrepreneurs often overlook. However, it’s vital to make this a priority so your business can grow and expand exponentially in the future.

While moving backward can feel defeating at first, recognize the value of getting a fresh start from a fresh perspective so you can confidently move forward more effectively.
